Sunrun CalReady
A historic Virtual Power Plant program for qualifying California battery customers. Participants earn rewards for supporting the grid at peak demand times on up to 35 days per year. We are excited to offer CalReady again in 2025, with even more impact!
- Seamlessly use & export stored energy at critical demand times
- Get rewarded for relieving grid strain
- Largest single-company Virtual Power Plant in American history
Your battery system just got even more rewarding

Use & export stored power
From 5/1 through 10/31, your battery system will seamlessly send energy to your home and to the grid when electricity demand is highest. These CalReady “grid events” can occur for 1-2 hours each between 4-9PM, and no more than 35 times per year.

Get rewarded
You’ll receive a reward at the end of the season for each battery in your system to spend on whatever you’d like. You’ll also receive Net Energy Metering (NEM) credit on your utility bill for energy exported to the grid.

Keep power for backup*
Backup batteries will keep 20% of their energy reserved when grid events are called. Rest assured, your battery will not send any power to the grid during an outage.
FAQs
Who is Sunrun CalReady available to?
CalReady is available to qualifying Sunrun solar & storage customers in California. We will reach out to you via email notifying you if you qualify and are enrolled prior to the start of the CalReady season.
When and how will I receive my reward?
If your battery has been successfully enrolled for the entire CalReady season, you will receive an email from Sunrun with instructions to redeem your reward in November 2025.
What happens if there’s an upcoming outage or storm?
Your battery system will not send any energy to the grid during an outage. Storm Mode (an automatic Sunrun setting for LG and SolarEdge backup batteries) or Storm Watch (if enabled in the Tesla app for Powerwall) will keep you prepared for storms.
How does this program differ from how my battery behaves normally?
Different home batteries work differently (Tesla, SolarEdge, LG, etc.).
LG & SolarEdge batteries (Sunrun systems in CA):
Pre-programmed to save on utility bills (charge/discharge based on your electric rate)
*Keep 20% reserved for backup power (Shift™ batteries do not provide backup power during an outage).
Tesla Powerwall (Sunrun systems in CA):
Can be customized for each home (self-use, use and export, or purely backup power).
*A backup reserve of 20% is usually recommended.
For CalReady:
When activated for CalReady grid events, stored energy first powers your home, then the grid (if extra is available), until reaching your backup reserve. This is similar to standard Time of Use discharging, condensed within a 1-2 hour window.
*Backup batteries will keep a 20% reserve for grid events; and in an outage, the battery system won’t send energy to the grid – all remaining energy is used for home backup.
Outside of grid events, your battery will resume its default settings.
